This new and creative Dog Scooter Design fulfills needs & gives endless opportunities and has many advantages over the traditional dog scootering/ dog carting activities. The most outstanding of which is the ability to steer the dog! Traditional systems have the dog out front in charge of the steering! Yes it can be done but only with hours of intensive dog training to "turn" on command. Even then "turns" are wide and lack precision. Thus can never be "counted on" in the high density urban environment. This allows "virtually no training" and really opens this activity up to almost any dog and owner. It makes this system very safe for the dog & owner. All the dog needs to do is "go forward" which they love to do. The pace is generally that of the dog - a built in safety feature for the dog. (faster than the human being dragged along behind with a leash). The scooter also has great brakes and larger wheels making it useable most, if not all, of the year and on most surfaces (including wider/ smoother trails). It also does not place any downward loads on the dog, is very light and has a low rolling resistance. Initial resistance to get the scooter going is the only real strain on the dog, once the scooter is rolling the actual pulling load is minimal and of course the rider has the option of relieving the dog of all the load by kicking - so essentially you share the load with the dog and become a team.

The scooter is the most appropriate device for this outrigger because it has such a low center of gravity, it is very stable and easy to ride even at a dogs walk. The way the harness is attached to the outrigger the dog does not pull the scooter down to the side It rides neutral of the dog (particularly at a trot- at a gallop you will feel the pulsing thrusts thru the steering). But the rider does need to pay attention and be ready to correct the steering and or apply the brakes when the dog decides to accelerate. I would compare it to moderate mtn. bicycling. Dog Scootering really is a sport. Once your dog is experienced and in the absence of distractions (dogs, cats, squirrels) virtually anyone can ride this including 10 yr. old kids and older folks.

The control offered is actually better than a leash! The dog is always in the same location and can only go strait ahead. And with your weight on the scooter and the brakes applied the dog cannot go anywhere. Even in motion the dog cannot get traction to the side and ends up going forward which can be controlled by the steering wheel & brakes. This design thus is very manageable, maneuverable and safe even on busy urban sidewalks and bike paths.
